Description
Origins: The mystery of a higher entity captured the imagination of mankind perceived as 'spirits' by primitive cultures. The book explores how the early Homo sapiens used rituals to appease spirits and devised tribal traditions.
Philosophies and Prophets: Philosophies emerged between 800 and 200 BCE during the Axial Period, in the East and the West as well as the theocratic beliefs. Prophet's and their teachings became the holy texts and basis of organized religions.
Organization: Diversity in services created sectarian divisions in faiths to acquire their own identity. Imperial ambitions of rulers sparked a race for supremacy to increase numbers by establishing state religion and through conversion. Role of women in religious affairs is traced back to 1880 BCE and how it was diminished.
Exploration: Similarity in teachings and variation in interpretations for desired influence are examined. Science and religion were regarded as philosophies but were separated, science rooted in scientific method based on evidence and religion in the mystic realm of faith, both seeking the truth. Science is now shifting from reductionism ideology to the holistic approach and consider the dynamics of integrative systems in human biology and a higher power controlling the universe. Consciousness, mind/body connection, and New Age concepts are discussed. Heaven and hell and the impact of actions on the after-life are examined. The exploration of scholarly works in theology, history, and science gave the insights for this book.
Reference Book: It is a valuable reference for parents, teachers, and religious leaders with a glossary for six religions. It is hoped that the global youth is actively engaged to explore other faiths so that they can interact with people around the globe as well informed persons. Interviews with the religious leaders of the world show that spirituality is the unifying link in all faiths.
